A bead is a small, decorative object that is formed in a variety of shapes and sizes of a material such as stone, bone, shell, glass, plastic, wood or pearl and with a small hole for threading or stringing. The earliest beads were made of a variety of natural materials which, after they were gathered, could be readily drilled and shaped. As humans became capable of obtaining and working with more difficult materials, those materials were added to the range of available substances. Jewellery making beads come in many types and sizes, and in lots of different materials. There are so many unique styles of beads to work and experiment with to create signature jewellery designs. Some of the types of beads available include glass, wooden, clay, plastic, shamballa style, shell, metal, pearl, semi-precious stones, Swarovski beads and pendants.
